But eventually, these apps have faded into the background to be replaced by newer apps that get the whole iPhone community revealing.

As of today, there are three apps that are showing great potential and may just be the next big things in the world of iPhone apps.

VSCO Cam

Camera+ vs VSCO CAM (Photo credit: Ian Zakharov)

Dubbed as the app that may replace Instagram, the VSCO Cam has only one drawback: its $0.99 price tag. After all, despite the massive sales Apple is enjoying through its app store, a lot of iPhone users don’t spend money on apps and get away by using just the free ones. The VSCO Cam, however, has caused some iPhone users to change their minds. After all, for its price, the app offers excellent value.

The VSCO Cam is a simple camera app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Like Instagram, it is easy to use and allows built-in photo processing. But while Instagram became an instant success among social media fans, VSCO Cam has won the approval even of artists, as it allows more effects, a sleeker interface, and a more streamlined workflow.

Hotel Tonight

Hotel Tonight is a free app that lets iPhone users in on the cheap reduced-price rooms offered by various hotels all over the country. When hotels have rooms that are not booked for the night, they can send the available options to the app along with the reduced prices they are offering. This app is great for the backpacker, the spontaneous traveler, and the tourists who procrastinate on booking their accommodations.

Starbucks

Starbucks app is now fast climbing the charts, especially now that the app can keep Starbucks gold cards thus giving coffee lovers an easier way of tracking their gold star rewards. The app allows two users to use the same gold card account and also allows anyone to send Starbucks gift cards to another app user.

Scout Mob

If there’s an app for travel lovers, camera lovers, and coffee lovers, there’s also one for food lovers. The free Scout Mob app gives you tips on the best food places in the town where you are currently located. The app registers your location on the map and narrows down the dining options to make it easier for you to find the best place to eat. A lot of foodies have found their favorite restaurants through this app, and users also have the chance to get discounted meals through it.

No other smartphone has been received just as warmly.

But although Apple seems to be on a pretty well-protected pedestal, there are some threats to it that may have a chance at dragging it down a notch.

The end of the trend.

iPhone iPhone iPhone (Photo credit: kowitz)

Seeing the public’s response to the iPhone every single time a new model is released, the iPhone seems more like a trend than any other smartphone. And although this does mean more iPhone users all over the world and more sales for the folks at Cupertino, it does also mean one other thing: there is an end, as with all trends.

The danger lies in becoming all too common. As more and more people use the iPhone, the phone, which used to symbolize the culmination of coolness in the gadgets department, loses some of its spark. Now that everyone has it, it doesn’t seem like such a big deal anymore.

Its fast-improving rivals.

Apple still obviously holds the title as the most popular smartphone around, but there are now four other models that come close to it. First of these is the Samsung Galaxy S2, which has even prompted a couple – or more – iPhone users to switch. The S2 has been the biggest threat in terms of competition for the iPhone, especially with its larger RAM storage, which makes it better at some of the most important tech specs of smartphones – speed and multi-tasking capabilities.

More recently, Nokia has taken a jab at the new iPhone 5 using a comparison chart telling consumers in no uncertain terms why the Nokia Lumia 920, running on Windows 8 mobile OS, is better than the iPhone 5. And in some ways, it really is.

Apple’s other creation – the iPad.

In the end, Apple is still making money, but the iPad has undoubtedly provided tough competition for the iPhone. Now, people are opting for cheaper phones then splurging on an iPad, which can do practically everything iPhones can except send SMS and make calls.

Apple’s own smartphone poison – Price.

NEW YORK - OCTOBER 14: People shop in a Apple store on October 14, 2010 in New York, New York. Riding on the success of the iPhone and iPad, shares of Apple Inc. climbed $1.60 to close at $300.14 on October 13.
As more and more smartphones start coming closer to the specs and revelry offered by the iPhone, more and more people are starting to realize just how much more expensive the iPhone is than it should be. If superiority and being ahead of the smartphone game gave Apple a valid excuse to sell their phones at radically high prices, the case is different now that other brands are coming up with similar – and even better – phones at much lower prices. Eventually, the market will catch on. Whether Apple would be able to come up with a solution to the impending crisis could only be guessed at, but chances are high that they will.

But the iOS 6 does make a huge difference to the smartphone experience, if not some of the biggest an update has ever achieved. Here are some of them.

An enhanced communications experience

Apple has made a few refinements to its phone app, which is now capable of setting reminders to call someone back, sending “I am busy” messages when you’re unable to answer calls, and rejecting calls under a “Do not disturb” mode. Trying to avoid someone? You can reject repeated calls from him with a few clicks on your Apple device.

iCloud tab sync

It is now possible to sync all your viewed webpages across all your iOS devices thanks to a new feature built into Safari.

Smart App Banners in Safari

When surfing with Safari using an iOS 6 device, you will notice useful little banners that slide down the screen. These banners offer users the option to launch into an app or download an app directly from iTunes.

Facetime over 3G

FaceTime (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Facetime is certainly one of Apple’s better inventions. What used to be Skype is now fast becoming Facetime, and this app is expected to become even more popular now that users without WiFi can now Facetime using their 3G connection.

Selective photo sharing

The iPhone’s biggest achievement is how it managed to make sharing easier. And now, photo sharing is made even easier – and more suited to users’ needs – thanks to the selective sharing feature that comes with iOS 6. This app allows you to select which photos to share to which friends without having to open Flickr and Facebook accounts.

Guided Access for kids

Apple is far from being the perfect company, but it is known for its uncanny ability to forge new directions in the smartphone industry. Just like what Apple did with iCloud, it is doing now with two new features on the iOS 6. One of these two is the Guided Access, a feature especially designed for kids. This new app puts limits to the access kids can enjoy when using an iPhone. The feature allows parents to disable some parts of the device’s screen so kids don’t accidentally hit buttons. These restrictions can even be integrated across all your iOS 6 devices.

Passbook

The other feature that only Apple could possibly see potential in and could develop into a full-grown system used all over the world is the Passbook. Although Passbook is hardly useful these days, it has given companies and developers a chance to explore the app and realize its full potential. As early as now, companies are now creating systems compatible with Passbook. In the near future, people can store electronic tickets and rewards points in their device. It’s the kind of change only Apple saw coming and only Apple can set into motion.

It’s probably not news to you that the iPhone 5 has managed to sell 5 million handsets in its first weekend alone. The record-breaking response tops the iPhone 4’s 4 million sales record following its release. But while Apple is not wasting time publicizing its newest sales figures, they are also working doubly hard to keep complaints under control.

But out of all these seemingly insignificant complaints are 5 major issues that Apple should address. Here are the 5 most important complaints about the iPhone 5.

Scratches and chips arrive all too soon.

Several Internet polls revealed that many people took out their iPhone 5 from their boxes and noticed that the casing is already scratched or chipped. Some also said that the aluminum casing starts revealing signs of use after just a week of use. After a customer sent a complaint through e-mail regarding the problem, Phil Schiller of Apple’s marketing department replied by saying that ‘any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use’ thus exposing the natural silver color of aluminum. We get that; but couldn’t Apple have done something to keep the aluminum from getting worn out this fast? After all, the iPhone 5 has not even been out for months.

That purple flare of light.

Some customers, particularly those who love using their smartphone cameras, started complaining shortly after the iPhone 5 release that the camera seems to be creating a harsh purple flare when it snaps a light source. This happened, in varying degrees, for both artificial and natural light sources. While some people may not notice or even mind, the more conscientious critics compared the iPhone 5 with its predecessor, the iPhone 4, and even released photos showing how the hard-to-ignore purple flare is nowhere to be seen in iPhone 4 snaps.

As expected, this has been brought to the attention of AppleCare Support, who wasted no time telling customers that the only way to avoid the purple flare is to angle the camera away from bright light sources when taking photos and that the flare is ‘normal’ for the iPhone 5 camera.

Where there’s a new iPhone 5, there’s plastic waste.

This may seem more like collateral damage rather than an actual problem with the device, but the fact that the iPhone 5 forces folks to cut down their SIM has led to an increase in plastic waste, especially during the weekend of its release. The nano-SIM is forcing even the iPhone 4 and 4S users to throw their micro-SIM away and get a new one. Individually, this seems insignificant, but more than 5 million people had to contribute to plastic waste levels that fateful iPhone 5 weekend.

Data leakage, anyone?

Some iPhone 5 users recently experienced a strange data leak that cost them hundreds of dollars in excess charges due to a WiFi issue. At first, as most of the complaints came from those using Verizon,Verizon was placed in a very bad spot. Soon, however, even AT&T customers began experiencing the same problem. Despite the fact that this is inflicting real damage to its loyal customers, Apple has so far remained quiet about it.

There’s just not enough iPhone 5 in the world.

Despite all these complaints, a growing number of people are joining the lines in Apple stores to get their hands on the new iPhone. Unfortunately, a lot of them have to go home empty-handed as Apple declared a shortage on stocks. Apple’s only response is that the larger 4-inch Retina Display is just hard to make, and that even though they have contracted three companies to supply the displays, the demand is just too hard to keep up with.
